Bulldogging

Bulldogging, also known as steer wrestling, is one of the fastest of all rodeo events. In order to succeed in bulldogging, one must be strong and have speed as well as accurate timing. Many of the most successful cowboys in bulldogging are actually quite large. It is for this reason that the sport of bulldogging is commonly known as the big man's event.

When considering joining this event you should know that bulldogging is a time's event. This means that cowboys compete against the clock as well as against one another in bulldogging.

Just like with tie-down and team roping, cowboys participating in bulldogging begin the box. A barrier is placed across the box and then the steer is placed into the roping chute. After the cowboy gives the nod, the steer will be released and the cowboy then charges after the steer. In bulldogging, the cowboy will then work to catch up to the steer as fast as he is able. Once he reaches the steer he will then lean over, jump off his horse and grab the steer by the head.

In most bulldogging events, a winning time will fall between three and four seconds. One of the most interesting aspects of bulldogging is that the event continues to become faster and faster. In the event a cowboy breaks the barrier in a bulldogging event a 10 second penalty will be applied. In most cases, this will eliminate any chances of the cowboy taking home any money.
